Pomeranian Care Tips

When you bring your pom home you can expect an entertaining and loving companion, but you cannot expect to get a dog that is a playmate for small children.
When you get home, everyone will want to hold or touch the puppy. Don’t over do it. Especially don’t allow children in the home to handle it to much at first. Let them pet its head or touch it in the crate, reserving more activity for a few days later. The stress of leaving its litter mates and adjusting to a strange environment will strain this little baby. Cuddle and play with it but also give it plenty of rest.
During the first month, you will need to make it foot wise. A pom puppy running under your feet will not only endangers itself, but also can cause you to take a nasty fall. To avoid this problem, start teaching it to stay away from your feet. Scoot your feet for the first few weeks until your puppy is foot wise.

*Unsafe foods for your puppy include... Grapes, Raisins, and Onions have recently been linked to kidney disease, and blood disorders in dogs. Chocolate can be deadly.

*Colored Mulch and several plants are poisonous to any dog! Please supervise your pom when it is outdoors playing. An exercise pen will help keep your baby safe: http://dogs.about.com/cs/disableddogs/a/poison_flower.htm

*Recliner chairs: Be sure the pup is not under the footrest when you put it down:

*Don’t leave it unattended on furniture, poms have very little fear, they would not think twice about jumping down off high furniture.
*Puppies love to chew, please be sure all electrical cords are up out of puppy’s reach.

* Do not give them cooked bones: especially cooked chicken or turkey bones. Pieces can splinter off and get stuck in the puppy's throat.

*When you get your new baby toys, which of course I think is great, but please be careful what you choose for them! You do not want to get them toys with parts they can chew off and you don’t want to get them rawhide. Unfortunately, there have been pom owners that lost their pet due to choking on rawhide, so please do not get these for your baby. I know they are made for dogs. However, because poms are so tiny they can choke very easily on a small piece that they may chew off.

My Dogs love dried beef tendons, bully sticks, and hard pressed rawhide bones, they are different from the softer regular rawhide.
However, throw away any pieces that have been chewed to a size the pup could choke on.
There are lots of safe toys and treats out there for your baby- just keep in mind the size of your baby when choosing its  toys and treats :-)

What to Do If Poisoning Occurs13

this section is from about.com
Prevention is key - do your best to eliminate all sources of toxicity. However, exposure to toxins is still possible. It is important to recognize the signs of toxicity and act immediately. Know when to call the vet14. However, if you are in doubt - call your vet anyway. He or she can advise you on the next step, such as whether or not to induce vomiting. Try to gather as much information as possible (as time allows)- get the packaging from the toxin and a sample of the ingested material if available. In case of toxin exposure, keep a list of these important phone numbers in a visible location:
